Underground Storage Tank Replacement & Upgrades

Groundwater treatment systems Construction dewatering Groundwater treatment equipment

When underground storage tanks (USTs) are removed and/or installed, the excavation pit often must undergo construction dewatering. The resulting water is often contaminated and must be trucked off-site, or treated prior to discharge on-site. Depending on the volume of dewatering water generated, on-site treatment can be the only economically viable alternative. The treatment equipment required to meet discharge limits can vary depending on what contaminants are in the water. Carbonair has a full line of rental groundwater treatment equipment available for these applications including our diesel powered STAT Low Profile Air Stripper Trailers, designed for this specific application.

Project Example: Groundwater Treatment Equipment Rental for UST Replacement

Temporary groundwater treatment system in support of removal and upgrade of underground storage tanks (USTs) at a Gas Station

Carbonair was asked to provide a temporary groundwater treatment system to treat contaminated groundwater that was generated by dewatering performed in support of an underground storage tank removal and upgrade at a gas station in north Florida. In this case, the groundwater at the site was heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (gasoline and diesel), which were present in dissolved and free product forms. The groundwater also had high concentrations of Arsenic and other heavy metals. Due to the high water table, the excavation area had to be dewatered at a rate of 500 gpm to allow for the removal of the old tanks and installation of the new tanks. Carbonair designed and provided an on-site groundwater treatment system for a maximum flow rate of 500 gpm.

A Carbonair field crew mobilized, set up, and trained the operators of the system. The system performed as designed, meeting the required discharge limits and treating the water generated at the site at the required flow rate. The use of diesel pumps and Carbonair’s diesel driven air strippers avoided the need for a costly power drop or expensive generator rental. At the conclusion of the project, Carbonair field technicians provided demobilization services including the extraction and disposal of the spent carbon and ion exchange filter media, and demobilization of the equipment.
